Environmental Efforts

Robotics education can make a difference! We developed and continue to support the Eco Garden on our Kalani High School campus. The Eco Garden features a hydroponics garden and a talapia farm. Using software such as ProE, we have been able to automate garden features such as generators, water levels, and security.

We have also used CAD software to develop an Eco Garden at the     Hawaii Convention Center. The Eco Garden is in the shape of our islands, with each garden representing different plantation.

Such a Bright Idea!

“The Kalani Robotics team doesn't sell cookies to raise funds, the Girl Scouts already do that”

We sell the FIRST LED lightbulb sponsored by Google. Why not save the environment while we learn, play, and work under the light? The LED light bulb uses 1/4 of the electricity of the old florescent bulb and only 1/2 of even the common CFLs. Lasting 9 years isn't the point; 9 years of safe lighting is. LED lightbulbs are made from hard plastic opposed to glass, which will shatter. LED is very efficient in energy conservation and does not produce heat like CFL bulbs, thereby  preventing burns. The most important feature of the LED lightbulb is that it is mercury free, which is contained in the CFL lightbulbs (noted on box in fine print). Why is mercury dangerous? Mercury has been linked to nervous disorders, cancer, kidney failure, and more. Disposal of mercury is very expensive and many households are unaware of the proper way to dispose of CFL bulbs. They simply dispose of CFL light bulbs in ordinary trash containers, setting the stage for an environmental disaster. As you may know, landfills often over fill and flood on rainy days, releasing those mercury-containing lightbulb into the ecosystem. But there is a simple solution, go LED! Have old CFLs? Bring them to us and we will safely dispose of them through Hawaii Electrics (HECO).

School Improvement.

Other than the eco garden contribution the Kalani Robotics team continues other efforts in improving our school. In 2009 with the one-one laptop initiative we have set 80 wireless linksys towers making our campus a full wireless hotspot. During the summer we also help with laptop maintenance.

Our team shares our resources with our school as well. We have developed the Drafting Tech I, Drafting Tech II, and Introduction to Industrial Engineering class with the ProE program. Teaching ProE to the other school population in a classroom environment. Our RWDC team is highly involved with this effort.

Community Interactions.

The team holds demonstrations in multiple community locations such as APEC, AFCEA Conference, Ward Shopping Center, Bishop Family Museum, Pearl Harbor Family Day Events, B&N Book Store,  and even Kahala Nui Retirement Home. We also host feeder school events.

FLL at Kalani High School

To support the development of FIRST Lego league teams in our community we host the annual East Oahu Lego League Competition.

International Robotics Development

We are continuing our efforts in starting a FRC and FLL program in Japan beginning at the Saint Maur International School in Yokohama, Japan. We support its development through emails and video conferencing.

Also in New Zealand the Kalani robotics team PR to begin a FIRST team.

Feeder School Robotics Development

International outreach is important but we cannot forget about our own community as well. We provide materials and information to our feeder schools to maintain their robotics program.

Kaimuki Middle School : VEX and FLL

Wilson Elementary School : FLL

Kahala Elementary School : FLL

Aloha Engineering was also in efforts to strengthen our community robotics program. In collaboration with team 1138 Eagle engineering of Chaminad College Prep School we gather rookie Hawaii robotics team and teach the fundamentals to sustainability and offer various new projects.

Project PERCH (Pre-Engineering Research Center of Honolulu)

Kalani Robotics newest outreach initiative is project PERCH. The projects intent is to create a community technology center where everyone can be involved in robotics education. In a central location we can have sharing of resources, large group travel rates, sharing of ideas, and closer community interactions. The group of people who will most benefit out of this is students of school which does not have robotics and homeschool students.

Corporate Tournament

The corporate tournament is a robotics tournament for adults, utilizing kits provided from our program. Registration fee will be in form of a sponsorship of our high school robotics team at $500. The cost will pay for the registration of five employees and the kits that comes upon registration. This event will be hosted at Kahala Mall which will promote your company as well our STEM initiative to the community.
